Product Details

This allegorical painting refers to the rape of Persephone by Hades, the story in Greek mythology being that Persephone the daughter of Demeter is picking flowers in the meadow when Hades rises up from the Underworld on his chariot and abducts the girl. Demeter causes the world of plants to die. The Olympians send Hermes to convince Hades to return Persephone to Olympus, and he agrees as long as she has eaten nothing. But, she had eaten 6 pomegranate seeds. The painting shows a pomegranate sitting on a man's handkerchief, the handkerchief being stained with juice; lying next to this is a faded cosmos flower. The painting is 9 x 12 oil on cradled board. The painting does not require framing as its depth is 1.5 inches and the edges are finished. There is a sawtooth hanger attached to the back.
